Dimensions: with frame: 22.3 x 18.4 cm watercolor: 16.5 x 12.7 cm Jean-Claude Rumeau is a pupil of Jacques-Louis David and Jean-Baptiste Isabey, and is related to troubadour style. This charming drawing illustrates an episode of Sophie Cottin's troubadour novel "Mathilde or Memoirs from the History of the Crusades" published in 1805 which was very successful. The novel describes the story of an impetuous passion and modest love between Mathilde, sister of Richard the Lionheart and Malek Adhel, Saladin's brother.
