He lived in Paris for a while and created urban landscapes and similar street scenes in Budapest and Vienna. Berkes studied at the Academy of Fine Arts between 1889 and 1894 in Budapest, Hungary. He first started painting landscapes, then changed to paint street scenes in Budapest. His popularity and sales increased, he began to "mass produce" several of his works, thus meeting the requirements of art dealers of his age. His work went through clear, dark periods as he experimented with light.
