"Pendulum XIXth Gilt Bronze"
Patinated bronze clock, gilded with mercury; the dial is guilloché and silvered. Restoration / Louis Philippe period. Romantic subject in 17th costume, the character is probably a girl disguised as a boy or a page, no doubt an actress, a famous theatrical or literary character; may be Rosalinde, the heroine of Shakespeare's "As You Like It“ forced to conceal herself in a masculine garb; can still be the "Jocelyn" of Lamartine or Mademoiselle de Maupin, the famous novel by Théophile Gautier (1835) inspired by the life of an actress of the same name, at the end of the 17th, and who used to disguise herself as a boy.
