"Flemish School 1560, Follower Of Michel Coxie, The Meeting Of Abraham And Melchisedech (73 X 1"
Great painting of a Flemish School circa 1560, announced follower of Michel Coxie but closer to the Circle of the Master Prodigal Son who painted the same scene with very slight differences. The subject of the meeting of Abraham and Melchisedech comes from the Old Testament. Abraham leaves on the command of God, his homeland with his wife Sarah and his nephew Lot to reach Palestine. Arrived at destination, Abraham and Lot separate and share the kingdom. Lot is attacked and held prisoner. Abraham delivers him and returning victorious, he meets the king of Sodom and Melchizedek. This painting shows us the moment when Melchizedek, king priest of Salem (Jerusalem) bows to the Lord's protege and presents his gifts, bread and wine. In exchange, Abraham offers him some of his booty. Abraham is kneeling with the soldiers behind him, Melchizedek, wearing a red velvet hood, is in front of the servants. This scene is marked by a red tone that responds to various places and gives a thread in the reading of the painting. Between the two main characters is a landscape perspective that gives depth. To note, the superb work of later parquetry. Posterior frame in the spirit of the XVIIth Dutch. Very good state. Dimensions without frame: L 105 cm / H 73 cm Dimensions with frame: L 125 cm / H 96 cm
