Charles Edmond Duponchel, architect of the Rothschild family, designed the hotel of Baroness James de Rothschild at 17 rue Lafitte, as well as some of the furniture on the ground floor. It was during a dinner at the Rothschilds in London, we are told, that stung by comments on the failure of the French decorative arts he undertook on the field to carry out an order for goldsmithery. He then asked the house Odiot to make this order on drawings of the sculptor Jules Klagmann. The latter is unsatisfactory so he turned to one of the best workers of the time Jean Valentin Morel. The capital raised by Duponchelen 1842 enabled Morel to establish itself. He won many royal and imperial prizes and commissions. In 1846 the association with Duponchel became effective. Morel emigrates to London in 1848.
