Object description :

"Medieval Batismal Fund"
Medieval baptismal funds, prior to the sixteenth century, monolithic, Dauphinoise hard stone, from the former priory church Saint Pierre de Moirans (Isère) dating from the twelfth to the nineteenth century, these baptismal funds were donated by the Bishopric to the Abbé Bourgeat, originally from the town, in thanks for his generous contribution to the construction, from 1903 to 1911, of the new village church. The old church was decommissioned in 1919, it is the last vestige of the Priory Saint Pierre, one of the oldest of the dauphiné erected around 1012, and was built on the remains of an old rural church of the Merovingian period. Documentation below. This baptistery was pierced and turned into an applied fountain in the early 20th century, a simple mouth or mascaron would complement (see DJ 351). Its inside diameter is 63 cm. Romanesque Church Saint Pierre de Moirans http://www.ville-moirans.fr/269-eglise-romane.html In a fundamentally religious society the role of the church during the Middle Ages is important. In 1016, the foundation of a Benedictine priory by Humbert bishop of Grenoble and a church are attested in Moirans. It is supposed that St Peter 's church was built on the site of a Roman church on the Rome - Vienna axis: it was the imperial transalpine road which joins the Mont - Genèvre pass by the Oisans more ancient (the foundations date from the fifth century), which was itself built on the ruins of a pagan temple whose remains have been discovered (including fragments of votive altar and an epitaph). It could be built with many Gallo-Roman materials in reuse. Moirans was, in antiquity, an important station, established along the axis Rome-Vienna. Of the two buildings, only today remains the church St Pierre which is one of the most beautiful medieval churches of Dauphiné and testifies to the presence of Romanesque art in the region.
