"Cabinet Or Jewelery Box Cabinet, Augsburg, Ex Coll Rothschild, Circa 1740"
Cabinet, or jewelry box
Germany, Augsburg around 1730-1740
Wood, paper dominated, parchment and brass
Very good condition, some stains on the paper, missing a partition
Provenance: Rotshchild coll (R.761, black mark under cabinet)
Small jewelery cabinet or rectangular wooden cabinet covered with cold-stamped parchment with a black interlacing decoration with flower reserves and gold decorative elements. The cabinet opens with a lid revealing a mirror. One side pulls out to reveal two secret drawers. On the back, in the central reserve the decor of a closed crown surrounded by two stars surmount a date, twice stamped "1739" and "1740".
This decor and this type of cabinet is found on a cabinet kept at the Victoria & Albert Museum (Inv.W9: 1 to 15-1940) and donated to an Augsburg's workshop around 1730. The quality of conservation and variety of decor on all faces makes of this cabinet, a rarest object . It is probably the work of a bookbinding workshop inspired by older ornaments: pea pods and mores ornaments.
