Olifant In African Wood

The term oliphant (whose etymology comes from oliphant for elephant), designates a trumpet, instrument of "music" to a single note modulable by the blower which was used during the battles.
Carved most of the time in a defense of ivory, copies are the pride of our museums the most famous being that of Roland during the Battle of Roncesvalles.
If those of antiquity had a mouth at the small end, those that are found in Africa are generally provided with a lateral mouth.
The copy that we present today is carved in wood, certainly from West Africa (Gabon? Congo?) and has a beautiful patina proof of his seniority. Small, 35.5 X 4.9 cm wide, it is presented vertically on an iron base by a rolled iron rod. small checks and slight gaps in the flag and the mouth.
Do not hesitate to ask for photos or additional information by mail or phone.
