He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1851. He studied under Léon Cogniet, and won the second prize in Rome in 1855. He took part in the Paris Salon from 1857 and was medalist in 1866 and 1868. Her religious scenes, genre subjects, and portraits of women are painted with a realism underlined by a firm drawing and a powerful polychrome.
