"Kôbô-daishi - Kûkai."
Polychrome lacquered wooden statue of Kôbô-daishi - Grand Master Providing the Law - is represented in the tradional iconography way: Kûkai is sitting, holding a rosary in his left hand and a five points vajra in his right hand. Our statue is exceptionally sitting on an inscribed chair. Kôbô-daishi (774 - 835), priest, scholar, artist and engineer, founded Shingon School of Japanese Buddhism. He began the works on a huge religious complex Kongôbu-ji at Kôyasan where he died.
