pencil on paper signed and dated
the first is signed THIERRY Gaston and dated feb. (18)88.
the second is signed THIERRY .G and date April (18)88.
These two drawings are executed after of the main panel of a Hellenistic sarcophagus, preserved in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (Collection of Antiquities, Inv.I 169).
The choice of the subject here focused on an episode of mythology staging the fight of the Greeks and Amazons during the Trojan War. The composition is inspired by the traditional models of Greek sculpture as in the arrangement of the characters, the postures and the attitudes of the fighets, as by the effects of draperies contrasting with the nakedness of the bodies.
This Fugger sarcophagus, owned since 1568 by the Fuggers of Augsburg, after passing through Venice, was found in Cyprus, presents a fine example of the Hellenistic sculpture of the 2nd half 4 ° s. BC. JC often admired by artists and archaeologists. The two drawings seem indeed to be a production within a french or belgian academic school (fine arts school of Paris or Brussels?) As suggested by the mentions in bottom right of one of the two drawings "Vu: Director F. Rops (?) ". the two leaves are in good condition and under glass, just to mention a natural yellowing and some light spots that do not interfere with the reading and the aesthetics of this art work.
