This ghost, made of metal and mounted on an iron foot, can be tilted backwards in various positions. The practice eye is pressed against the orbital rim by a spring. The phantome ophthalmoscope is a model on which medical students could try their hand at eye surgery. Not a human eye, but pig, sheep or beef eyes were inserted into the sockets and secured with adjustable tongs while budding surgeons tried their skills.
Professor Waldau was a German ophthalmologist who studied under von graefe in Berlin at the end of the 19th century and who was himself a pioneer in cataract surgery. There are examples of this ophthalmophantoma in John weiss' catalogue. There were two models, one with two eyes and this one with only one very probably an exposure model
All in all a beautiful object ideal for a cabinet of curiosity .....
