The Algerian Onyx-marble is a translucid material, compromise between marble and albaster. Many shades and variants exist : white, yellow, red and green. The Roman exploited these marble mines in the province of Oran. In 1849, Jean Baptiste Delmonte, Italian marble mason, discovered this quarry and exploited it. In 1858,he gave the company rights to the Compagnie des Marbres-Ony d’Algérie, founded by Alphonse Pallu. This material was very fashionable during the French Second Empire and received a medal at the 1862 World’s Fair.
