After a stay at the School of Fine Arts in Besançon, he worked as a building painter in Parisel then in Montbeliard and returned to Besançon in 1863. He left for Paris, entered the School of Fine Arts, attended the workshops of Pils and Matout. In 1870 he joined the Zouaves.
