Italian Bronze bust of Mellephebe after the antique, made in the 19th century. Dimensions: height of the bust 20cm, with the base: 27cm by 12cm. This beautiful bronze bust most certainly comes from the Chiurazzi foundry in Naples founded in 1840. This bust is a copy of the child Eros or Mellephebe found in the papyrus villa at Herculaneum, belonging to Lucius Calbunius Piso Calsovinus, around 58 BC This villa was buried during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Around 1750, this bonze was rediscovered. Today it is kept at the Naples Archaeological Museum (IN. NR. 5633). The bonze has a very beautiful patina of excavation, offers a high quality of finesse in its details and has a remarkable carving.
