This work is typical of the furniture made by the Italian cabinet maker Eugenio Quarti. Born into a family of cabinetmakers, he was sent to France at a very young age to study new techniques. Upon his return, he opened a workshop in Milan and collaborated with Carlo Bugatti.
His first works were strongly marked by the Moorish style of Bugatti, but as early as 1898 and the Turin exhibition, his personal style influenced by art nouveau was revealed. Its original and quality furniture was mainly made in walnut, with mother-of-pearl or metal inlays. It develops over time a harmonious elegance of the decor, with very fine patterns, using essences of precious wood and high quality inlays with noble materials such as silver, copper, bronze, tin thanks to this characteristic was called "the goldsmith of the cabinetmaker."
He participated in several international exhibitions and received numerous awards.
Eugenio Quarti worked on major decoration projects with the architects of his time: among these projects, the Villa Carosio in Baveno, the Grand Hotel and the Casino of San Pellegrino Terme, the Hungaria Palace Hotel in Venice (Lido) and especially the furniture of the "Bar Camparino", now known as "Bar Zucca" located at the entrance from the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan. Several of his works are today in museums, in Orsay in Paris, at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan or at the Wolfsonian Museum in Miami
