Henri Joseph Harpignies 1819-1916 Rock against the light Oil on strengthened canvas signed lower left dated (18) 76 23 X 34 cm in the spirit of Caruelle d'Aligny First commercial traveler, he practices painting near 1846. He then visits Italy and Germany. His naturalistic style is close to the barbizionniers. Anatole France called Harpignies “the king of trees”. His great touch delicacy expresses his admiration for Corot, whom he rubbed shoulders with around 1855. He settled in the Nivernais from 1869.
