"Young woman in the bath" or "the surprise" After François Boucher, Oil on canvas framed, Early 19th century Dimensions: Sight: 70 x 90 Framed: 88 x 108 François BOUCHER (1703 - 1770) Particularly prolific master, Boucher tackled all genres: religious painting, mythological subjects, rustic scenes, landscapes, animals, decorations of monuments and private houses, tapestry models. He is, perhaps, the most famous painter and decorative artist of the 18th century, who has been said to be one of the purest geniuses. He himself estimated, a year before his death, to have produced more than ten thousand drawings, but still found the time to work ten hours a day at idyllic and voluptuous representations of classical, mythological and erotic themes, decorative allegories and pastoral scenes. He was a painter of the court of Louis XV and the favorite of the Marquise de Pompadour, of whom he painted several portraits.
