Cornelis Pronk (1691-1759 g) was a Dutch engraver and painter. At the beginning of his career he was mainly a portrait painter and copyist of Dutch masters of the XVIIth century, and artist of theatre sceneries.
As an adult, Cornelius Pronk became an expert of « topographic » drawings (landscapes of Dutch cities, illustrations for atlas), but he really became famous when the Ducth Company of eastern India ordered drafts to decorate the Chinese porcelain in 1734-1740.
This porcelain (named « China of order » : made-to-measure porcelain) was made in China especially for the Company of the Eastern India, and delivered in Europe and sold with an extremely high price. For example the price for a set of plates was the same as for a house in Amsterdam. Cornelis Pronk created four different models. The model « Women with umbrella » was the most famous. The Dutch Company of Eastern India concluded the sale of the porcelain in 1740, because the production and delivery from China were too expensive. However the drafts of Pronk remained famous and have been copied thereafter.
