Artist: Banister A Colchester Angleterre
Solid silver watch from the Empire era with duplex movement. This watch is signed by the clockmaker Joseph Banister whose workshop was located in Colchester, 80 km from London in England. Joseph Banister was born in 1778 and was a watchmaker well known at the time for complications watches and regulators.
Major General Sir William Ponsonby bought this watch in June 1814 with the number 7210. Major General participated in the battle of Waterloo where he died while bogged down in a freshly plowed field. According to photos from the military archives, Lieutenant B. Christian, aide-de-camp to Major General, will be killed at the same time as General Ponsonby.
The story of General Ponsonby is told in the book "WATERLOO GENERAL" written by John Morewood.
The watch is in good condition except for a hair on the dial. A mystery still remains, it is the engraving of a tree on the front plate, perhaps it is the standard of the battalion
