Object description :

"Charles Lemanceau, Important Glossy Black Ceramic, Art Deco Period Sculpture Figuring Antelopes Or Gazelles"
Beautiful Art-Deco sculpture by famous artist Charles Lemanceau, this is a well-known model whose rarity lies mainly in the gloss black glaze which only had to be produced on a few copies because it was not found.
Our beautiful model represents a couple of gazelles and / or antelopes accompanied by their fawn.
** Circa 1930 **
Please note that the signature shines through the glaze but that it is not clearly legible, as is the case with the manufacture's brand.
Charles Lemanceau, born in Paris, studied there. He graduated from the School of Applied Arts and the National School of Decorative Arts in 1923 after being received at the Estienne school and the Boulle school. In 1923, in the wake of the Art for All movement launched by Victor Prouvé, he worked for the Spring Primavera art workshops - notably with the sculptor Chassaing - and through his creations for the pottery of Saint-Clément as well as for the pottery of Sainte-Radegonde or for Louis Lourioux establishments. In 1925, he exhibited at the Salon d'automne in the company of Robert Mallet-Stevens, Le Corbusier, Henri Matisse ... During his military service he sculpted the bust of Ambroise Paré for the Val de Grâce. He then opened a workshop in Paris in 1928: he built the funerary monument to Louis Lourioux there. In 1929, he won the ROBJ competition with a full-size decorative Nude. He also sculpted in 1930 a gazelle for La Maîtrise, Galeries Lafayette art workshop, hinds in 1929, greyhounds for Pomone, the Bon Marché art workshop, and a cat for Manufrance in 1931. He was in effect specially recognized for its bestiary in crackled enamel and is renowned for the stylization of animal forms. In 1933, he joined La Ruche and remained there until his retirement in 1967. From 1943 he taught at the workshops-school of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Paris - Île-de-France region, currently called " ateliers Grégoire ”, under the direction of Aristide Lomont. Thanks to its notoriety, it will benefit from public commissions including the tympanum of a church in Vitré in 1943 or the war memorial of Lanvollon in 1947. Distinction: 1963; vermeil medal of the Academic Arts-Sciences-Letters Society, Paris.
