pseudonym of Philippe Saby Viricel d'Artias Oil on canvas 60x73 cm "Scène paysanne" 1955
Signed "Saby" and dated 55 lower right
Philippe Artias, after having been part of the Resistance and led a career political, devoted to painting after the Liberation.
He is an expressionist painter in the entourage of Pignon and therefore, of Picasso with whom he worked in Vallauris in the 50s.
Under the influence of Pignon, but in a more abstract vein, his painting is both very structured and very written, made of scrolls and arabesques. More than the color, willingly strong, it is the line that determines the shape.
He led an international career, living between Paris and Rome.
The work scene in the fields that we present is treated with an expressionist touch, at the border between figurative and abstraction, in a strong harmony of dark or bright colors and interesting contrast effects.
