pseudonym of Philippe Saby Viricel d'Artias Oil on canvas 81x65 cm "Composition" 1960
Signed and dated 60 lower right
Philippe Artias, after having been part of the Resistance and led a political career, devoted himself painting after the Liberation. He is an expressionist painter in the entourage of Pignon and therefore, of Picasso with whom he worked in Vallauris in the 50s.
Under the influence of Pignon, but in a more abstract vein, his painting is both very structured and very written, made of scrolls and arabesques. More than the color, willingly strong, it is the line that determines the shape.
He led an international career, living between Paris and Rome.
The composition that we present is completely abstract, treated with a strong expressionist touch, made of characteristic arabesques with a limited harmony of colors and interesting contrast effects.
