The kimonos in tsumugi (silk pongee) are elegant, very appreciated , sometimes luxurious and belong to the category of kimonos called "woven" (orimono), which implies that the silk thread was dyed before being woven (there are exceptions, however, unlike kimonos made from white fabric and dyed afterwards (komon, hômongi ...).
The patterns are outlined in uninterrupted continuity by the seams. The followers of this kind of fabrics are real connoisseurs. During the Edo period (1603-1867), the different social classes were subject to strict rules even in the way of clothing. Indeed, silk was reserved for the nobility and the warriors. However, the silk growers began to manufacture for their own use, fabrics from silk threads of average quality, impossible to market. These fabrics which revealed irregularities on their surface and which looked nothing like silk (but rather cotton) were then very popular with the lower classes (merchants, bourgeois) who, thanks to this ingenuity, then had the possibility of wearing in peace a material which was prohibited to them. Nowadays, the tsumugi kimono is considered to be an ordinary garment since it is strongly advised not to wear it during an official event, a tea ceremony or an evening (except however for the tsumugi united with a coat of arms). There are three categories of kimonos in tsumugi:
● the most refined and luxurious fabrics where traditional patterns are cut and for which spinning and weaving (about 11 m) carried out by hand require several months of work such as Yuki tsumugi, Oshima tsumugi ..., named after their region of origin. These traditional techniques have acquired great value and such kimonos have become very popular. The prices here reach those of high fashion clothes.
● fabrics with a coarser and more irregular appearance (due to imperfections in the silk thread) and whose patterns are dominated by stripes and tiles. These characteristics make it an easy to wear and elegant garment: Yonezawa tsumugi, Ueda tsumugi .... (our model)
● plain tsumugi decorated with a coat of arms and formerly exclusively reserved for people of a certain age are currently very popular with younger due to their convenience.
