"Joseph Meissonnier (1864-1943) Return From Fishing In Martigues"
Bright and lively this oil on canvas by Avignon artist Joseph Meissonnier. It represents a scene of return from fishing animated by a child and a fisherman on his boat in front of the Madeleine Church in Martigues. the work is in very good condition, measures 83 cm by 64 with its carved wooden frame, and 46 cm by 65 without the frame; it is signed lower right. Born in Avignon on May 4, 1864, this painter was part of the "Groupe des Treize" created in 1912 by Clément Brun where he became friends with Joseph Hurard. He participated in a first exhibition on December 21, 1912 which was a great success, followed by a second exhibition on December 18, 1913, which was also the last of the Group. He died in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon on November 4, 1943
