"Grand Tondo: The Virgin And The Chair After Raphael, Italian School"
According to Raphaël, La Vierge à la Chaise or Madonna della Seggiola. The Virgin Mary holds the baby Jesus in her arms, both look at the spectator while Saint John the Baptist child, holding his cross, adores the messiah. The Virgin wears an ornate shawl on her shoulders, a great tenderness emerges from her gaze. Beautiful oil on canvas. This large tondo is framed by an important gilded mecca frame bringing its dimensions to 96 by 96 cm. Mecca gilding is an Italian technique consisting in the application of silver leaves and not gold, then covered with a golden varnish called mecca. It is this typical Italian process which makes it possible to obtain this pale gilding with silver reflections. Italian school, region of Tuscany. Period early 19th century.
