"Empire Wedding Bowl, Paris Around 1809, Sterling Silver,"
Very pretty solid silver wedding bowl from the Empire period. The handle has the form of two contemplating doves who are seated on the arch and Cupid's arrows. The Hallmarks of the piece are very interesting: The bottom and the lid are punched by the same silversmith. But the bottom carries the hallmark of the first Empire period (1798-1809), the cover is hallmarked in the second period (1809-1819). A very small hallmark on the edge of the bowl (An ear) tells us that this piece was probably still in the silversmith's workshop in 1809, which explains the difference in hallmarks between the two parts of the vegetable dish.
