The Wandala or Mandara are the most important ethnic group in the kingdom of Wandala located in northern Cameroon and northern Nigeria.
Before European colonization they had for neighbors and enemies the people of Bornu (in present-day Nigeria), militarily superior because they had a cavalry. But the Wandalà, in order to protect the theft of their cattle and the raids of slaves, equipped themselves with infantry on the front lines of full armor and a shield: the glagwa. These shields, made of bovine skin, were regularly maintained.
