"Louis XV Sormani Style Desk"
Rare small table for all purposes Louis XV style. In violet wood veneer, it opens on the front with a pull-out drawer. The feet are arched, the sides curved. Oak frame. Rich ornamentation of finely chiseled golden bronzes on all sides: ingot mold, scraps, hooves, frames and scrolls. Plaque "Veuve Paul Sormani et Fils, 10 rue Charlot Paris". Around 1880. Varnished with a pad in our workshop. Height 71 cm, width 84 cm, depth 46 cm. Paul Sormani was born in Venice in 1817. He established a cabinetmaking workshop in 1847 in Paris. His specialty quickly became the reproduction of 18th century furniture, in particular Louis XV and Louis XVI styles. During the Universal Exhibitions of 1855, 1862 and 1867, he received a medal and increased his clientele. He sells furniture to the Empress Eugenie. Paul Sormani moved to 10 rue Charlot from 1867, where he enjoyed great success until his death in 1877. His wife and son Paul-Charles continued manufacturing under the name of "Veuve Sormani & fils". The Maison Sormani was rewarded again at the Universal Exhibition of 1878 and that of 1892, as well as at the colonial exhibition 1883. In 1914, the Maison Sormani joined forces with the Maison Thiebaud frères to become Thiebaud-Sormani. She exhibited under this name in 1925 at the international exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. In 1934, the death of Paul-Charles Sormani led the house to close permanently.
