Karl GIRARDET (1813-1871): Painter born in Le Locle (Switzerland) on May 13, 1813, died in Paris in 1871. Elder son of Charles Samuel and the most outstanding personality of the large Girardet family, he was 9 years old when he came to Paris. He entered Léon Cogniet's studio and started at the Salon of 1836 with small genre subjects. Some biographers have classified Karl Girardet in the French school; by his genius, by his birth, he nevertheless belongs to the Swiss school. His success was immediate and his first submissions earned him a medal at the Salon. In 1842, a new medal was awarded to him for a painting commissioned by the city of Neuchâtel: "Protestant assembly surprised by Catholic Troops", exhibited at the Salon of 1842 and which, reproduced by engraving, became popular. Karl Girardet was one of Louis-Philippe's favorite painters and obtained numerous commissions from the royal family. The king paid the costs of his trip to Egypt with his brother Edouard while they were going to perform the paintings ordered for Versailles. Karl taken as subject: "Gaucher de Châtillon defending alone the entry of a street in the Faubourg of Munich", which appeared at the Salon of 1844. It was also read that was appointed in 1846 by Louis Philippe to paint with Blanchard the ceremonies of the Montpensier's wedding in Spain. After the fall of the Monarchy, Grirardet left Paris and settled in Brienz near his brother Edouard. From this time, Karl gave a large part of his time to landscape painting. Independently of his trip to Egypt, the artist had visited Italy and Spain and had brought back multiple sketches which he published in the "Magasin Pittoresque", in the "Around the World" and in numerous works for which he provides illustrations. His works are notably exhibited in museums such as that of the Louvre, Versailles, Chantilly, Reims, Nantes, Algiers, Amsterdam, Rouen ... Hippolyte PAUQUET (1797-1871): Chisel engraver, designer and lithographer, born in Paris on February 28, 1797. First student of his father Louis Pauquet, he then entered the School of Fine Arts on August 10, 1812 and then appeared in the Salon from 1821 to 1849. Hippolyte Pauquet worked almost constantly in collaboration with his younger brother Polydore Pauquet, but for engraving. He was also an illustrator and occupied an honorable place among the so-called romantic designers. We owe him thumbnails for "Les Contes du Passé", "The French painted by themselves", "Le Beranger" from 1847. His engraved work is important and includes in particular: "Modes et Costumes Historiques Par Pauquet frères", 1862 (96 plates) not without merit. Source: E.BENEZIT
