GONZALES Paul (1856-1938)

"Mireille, Arlesian lady with an olive branch, 1904"

Bas relief in patinated plaster,
Signed on the upper right and dated 1904,
Plate on the edge of the frame: "F.CARLI sculpteur Marseille"

Beautiful work of the Marseillais sculptor, Paul Gonzalès which represents the profile of famous mireille of Frédéric Mistral decorated with an olive branch.

A bronze copy signed and dated 1904 is in the collections of the Arlaten Museum.A patinated plaster copy adorns the living room wall of the Maison-Musée Frédéric Mistral in Maillane with this dedication: "To Frédéric Mistral, Homage of admiration and recognition. P.Gonzalès".At the reception of the bas relief, Frédéric Mistral wrote on February 24, 1912 to the sculptor Paul Gonzalès: "My dear artsite, I like your Mirèio a lot. She has already placed the highlight, in my living room, in the company of your Nerto: my thanks and congratulations "

Son of an industrialist who made his fortune in Tunisia, Paul Gonzalès trained late in sculpture with the Marseilles sculptor Auguste Carli who became his friend, Chapuis and Allouard.
He exhibited at the Salon of French artists from 1900 to 1914 bas-reliefs of religious inspiration and the Florentine Renaissance, and on regional subjects.
He also takes part in various artistic events in Provence: Avignon, Toulon ...

In 1922 during the Colonial Exhibition, he was president of the section of religious art.
The presence of the plaque on the frame of the sculptor François Carli means that the work was exhibited in his workshop. François Carli exhibited in his workshop-museum from 1902 to 1914 the sculptures of his brother Auguste Carli and those of his friend Paul Gonzalès.

His works are kept in various museums, notably in Marseille, at the Clavet museum in Avignon and at the Granet museum in Aix en Provence.

Note: the presence of cracks on the bas relief.

Size: 50 x 37 cm at sight without frame and 60 x 47 cm with its original wooden frame.
The bas relief was attached directly to its frame by the artist.
