Large charcoal drawing and background enhanced with gold powder, representing children hunting deer, bow and spear.
a very beautiful, very balanced design.
the children appear naked in a wooded landscape chasing a deer.
the background in the background is golden which brings a rather surprising contrast to the work.
we also perceive highlights of white chalk on the children's bodies etc ...
the drawing is signed lower right.
a symbolist school already a precursor of the art nouveau movement and even of a certain sensitivity for art deco!
we find patterns and this golden side that we will perceive much later in lacquered screens or art deco patterns.
this same type of motif of children hunting is found in certain earthenware or glassworks in 1900.
but this symbolist drawing is probably a representation of a history celebrated at the end of the 19th century.
Louis Carrier-Belleuse is the son of the sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, of whom he was a pupil at the school of fine arts. he exhibited at the salon and received a price for a painting in 1881 and for a sculpture in 1889.
he worked with his father, artistic director of the Sèvres factory in 1875.
in 1877 he trained in ceramics with Théodore Deck and participated in the Sèvres competition in 1882.
he became artistic director of the earthenware factory in Choisy-le-Roi in 1889.
a drawing full of inventiveness, a symbolist spirit with multiple messages imbued with the spirit and the abundant creativity of creators around 1900.
