Son of a carpenter, Mathurin Méheut was born on May 21, 1882 in Lamballe. He will follow an artistic course, from the School of Fine Arts in Rennes to the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris through the Normal School of Drawing Education.
Mobilized in the infantry during the First World War, this experience appears to be structuring for the work of Mathurin Méheut. Painter of nature, he sketches his comrades in arms and the harmless, everyday gestures of the furry ones.
It is the beginning of an almost ethnographic painting which will follow him on his return to Brittany where he will be the witness and the guardian of cultures, traditions, old trades.
This animated scene of the port of Concarneau one evening of August 1940, perfectly represents the unique style of the painter Mathurin Méheut, a simple gesture, clean lines, an instinctive color management and the inimitable capture of a lively atmosphere that is both nostalgic and warm.
