Although of Swiss origin, Steinlen moved to Paris at the age of 22 and became a key figure in the Night World, alongside Toulouse-Lautrec, Bruant, Rodolphe Salis, Adolphe Willette and Antonio de la Gandara.
His anarchist sympathies make him the defender of the poor, workers and other petty people who constitute, (along with cats!) A large part of his illustrated work.
The drawing that we present today, characteristic of his line, is of a larger format than those taken from the pages of his notebooks which he blackened daily, and bears the pen monogram which served to make the seal of the two workshop sales at Tajan many years ago. This man who climbs a slope with the help of a stick, naked or almost, is both detailed and suggested.
Traces of whitening due to the glue spots at the four corners.
