Beautiful 19th century bronze representing a clown and his learned dog, probably a royal poodle.
bronze signed Alfred Barye 1839-1882, son of the famous animal sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye.
he was a pupil of his father and exhibited at the salon from 1864 to 1882.
His father asked him to sign A.Barye Fils to differentiate them.
here Alfred Barye comes out of his father's animal themes and is interested in the theme of circus arts, fairground arts.
the clown appears in stage costume adorned with a butterfly mounted on a platform and making his royal poodle do tricks.
the scene is nice and very well done. it is a sand cast.
the carving is very nicely worked with a beautiful medal patina in the finish.
attention the hoop of the clown has been redone
a beautiful bronze, typical of circus arts around 1900.
