in a half-round, finely made portrait surrounded by a scoring decoration.
The whole of the medallion is in white earth, and the mantle surrounding the face, as the dots in red color, are in red earth.
As in the description concerning the Virgins of Martincamp made by Thérèse-Marie Hébert in the book "Les Potiers de Martincamp":
"The potter plays with two kinds of earth; the one that cooks red has just a transparent glaze, the one that cooks white appears either in yellow or in green. A decoration of pastilles and punches underlines the edges of the garment."
Another detail, as on the "Virgins of Martincamp", the eyelids of the face are in strong relief.
These similarities in techniques and color suggest a probable provenance from Martincamp, Normandy at the beginning of the 19th century or earlier.
Two original hanging holes (because varnished inside). Small firing defect due to a slight retraction of the red earth (see photos).
Note on the back a monogram written in ink in Gothic style, customary in the most 19th century collections.
Good condition.
