"Important Fireplace Clock Set In Bronze And Sienna Marble"
Large and beautiful fireplace clock set in bronze and Siena marble executed around 1825/1830. The clock rests on four large claw feet and is framed by a large pair of 5-arm candlesticks in patinated bronze and Siena marble. Its WIRE movement is signed by the watchmaker "MOINET AINE" who worked with BREGUET. It is in good working order. It is surmounted by a bronze statue of the Roman General and Politician Caius Marius in exile on the ruins of Carthage. This scene is derived from biographies written by Plutarch. Under the Restoration this scene was repeated a few times and alluded to Napoleon in exile! There is another model of the same subject in the Garde Meuble National as well as a very similar model but a little larger also executed in patinated bronze and Siena marble which is part of the Royal Dutch collection at the Het Loo Palace.
