"Jules Pascin (1885-1930) Cafe Scene"
Jules PASCIN (1885-1930), very pretty drawing representing a cafe scene, signed lower right and stamped with the studio stamp. In perfect condition, framed under glass. Dimension at sight: 22 x 24 cm Dimension with frame: 36 x 38.5 cm Jules Pascin born March 31, 1885 in Vidin (Bulgaria), and died June 2, 1930 in Paris, is an American painter and designer of Bulgarian origin . His experience as a satirical draftsman, his knowledge of German Expressionism are evident in his early works where some portraits recall Otto Dix or Grosz with a less incisive and less cruel line. He will rapidly evolve towards pastel, almost unreal colors that he aptly accords to the theme of the female body, the center of his production. Among the painters of the Paris school, Pascin occupies a special place, his art imposes itself by its expressive truth and its melancholy sweetness, he indulgently describes the underworld of "girls", with the help of a pearly touch, light in iridescent colors, in shades of gray, pink, ocher, blue-purplish, languid bodies with blurred shapes that release a heavy scent of eroticism. These women captured in their privacy are in fact the mirror of Pascin's bad living. His vibrant graphics, the line drawing only vaguely the contours of the body, allows him to make his models bathed in a light that reflects more a state of mind than the reality of a body. As such, he can appear as an uncompromising continuator of the masters of the eighteenth century and their taste for freedom and debauchery. His works are housed in all the major museums around the world, and there are many galleries that regularly present his work. Pascin has also illustrated many books, by Mac Orlan, Paul Morand among others.
