Persian Mahal carpet from the mid-20th century, circa 1950, 1960 in hand-knotted wool measuring 135 cm wide by 212 cm long.
The Mahal is from the city of Mahallat, near Arak (120 kms), better known
. These rugs are found in several villages near Mahallat, they are related to the Sarouk and more commonly but unfairly called Sarouk Mahal.
They are of good and good quality, although today's production is declining in quality.
The field of our model has a characteristic medallion, but which is not always present on the Mahal.
This diamond-shaped medallion has an arrow at each point and is decorated around the perimeter with a staircase motif followed by a pearl.
The field is covered with a subtle and fine decoration of stylized leaves and flowers, interlacing of branches.
The border decorated with a half of colored flowers placed end to end on a stylized wave design symbolizes water and the continuity of life, decoration repeated on the two braids strewn with carnation flowers.
The four spandrels are adorned with volutes having the appearance of rams horns.
This model is in good condition for its age, light wear on the fringes of this beautiful old carpet.
