Sky study, Circa 1961, Watercolor, 19 x 28 cm, annotated AK 175 : This watercolor is part of a series of sky studies painted by Kemp during the summer holidays with his family in 1961, when the artist, his wife and son were staying in a cottage at Skeabrae in the Orkney Islands in Scotland, and the father and son rowed Harray across the Loch. As his son recalled many years later, “in 1961 (…) the three of us went on vacation to the Orkney Islands. I had rented a rowing boat and Dad and I would go together where he would just sit and draw while I fished. Other days we would go around headlands and find a pattern to paint. I remember that one day the wind was so strong that I had to hold the paper on his board for him to paint, otherwise the leaves would have been washed away by the sea (...). "
