"Allegory Of Greed"
Giuseppe Nogari(Venice 1699-1763) “Allegory of Avarice” Oil on canvas 1740 c. Canvas measures 46 x 36 frame 76 x 66 Excellent storage conditions A manly portrait of extraordinary intensity depicting an old man with a piercing gaze and glassy eyes. He is holding a gold coin in his right hand. The figure creates a certain upheaval and lends itself well to impersonating "Avarice". It is undoubtedly a work of the famous Venetian portrait painter Giuseppe Nogarei who distinguished himself in the 18th century for the depictions of elderly figures always described with exceptional vigor. Unfortunately, even modest paintings are often approached with this talented author if they present subjects with connotations of his repertoire. In our case, the authorship of the painting is acclaimed by the presence of all the expressive characteristics of the portrait character. Even more interesting for the painting is the peculiarity of the subject and the great ability to perfectly represent Avarice with the appearance of the old man clutching the room.
