The Virgin With Chardonneret After Raphael XVIIIth

Oil on canvas mounted on parquet panel, depicting "The Virgin with the goldfinch" or "Madonna del Cardellino" after Raphael, in an important Florentine frame. Raphael's work, painted around 1506, is exhibited at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Against a background of a river and hilly landscape, this painting represents the Virgin holding a book, her son the infant Jesus and Saint John, arranged in a pyramid, symbol of the Trinity. Saint John offers a goldfinch to Jesus, symbol of the passion of Christ. The play of the skilful arrangement of the characters as well as that of the glances give to the text a real sensitivity. The Virgin looks at her son; the maternal image takes precedence over that of the holy woman in this gaze as well as in the gestures; she forms a protective circle with her arms around the two children. The two children also look at each other, Raphael thus marking the bond of tenderness established between Jesus and Saint John. Raphael, the French name of Raffaello Sanzio, is an Italian Renaissance painter and architect born April 6, 1483 in Urbino in the Italian Marches and died April 6, 1520 in Rome. Florentine frame in gilded wood decorated with a vegetal frieze and foliage intertwined with acanthus leaves. Two slight gaps very barely visible at the top of the frame.
