"Butsudan - Triad Of Compassion - Kannon, Seishi And Jizô - Edo Era - Japan"
Very beautiful Butsudan in which have found a triad composed of Kannon - Seishi and Jizô in painted wood. In the center, dominating the scene, Shô-Kannon, Bodhisattva of Compassion, stands before a mandora on a lotus flower placed on a carved plinth. His right hand performs the sign of teaching, while the left hand holds an attribute. On the right, Bodhisattva Seishi-bosatsu is standing on a lotus flower with his hands clasped. Associated with Kannon, Seishi whose iconography is largely adjusted to the latter brings to the triad the complementary virtue of "Sapience" (Wisdom of one who possesses knowledge, science to a high degree as well as qualities of judgment, skill, reason, prudence). On the left, Bodhisattva Jizô-bosatsu is standing on a lotus flower. The right hand makes the gesture of the gift, the extended left should hold (missing in this case), the precious Gem fulfilling the desires. Most of the points of Jizô's vow concern the relief promised for immediate existence: feeding and coming to those in need, giving medicine to the sick, etc ... But, another very important article relates to his action in the beyond: he will guide his faithful without fail to the peaceful abode of Nirvana. Therefore, given the association of these three bodhisattvas, we can conclude that this triad aims to advocate compassion. The two lotus flowers supporting the bodhisattvas are placed on a richly decorated cloudy backdrop. The base is in wood gilded with gold leaf and lacquered. It is pyramidal type with floral decoration. A sculpted dragon surrounds it. The chapel is in painted and lacquered wood. The porch is nicely cut out. The doors are richly embellished with cut, engraved, gilded metal plates and fixed with copper nails. The closure is decorated with flowers, the hinges are decorated with a Lotus flower. Edo era (1600 - 1868). Very good state of conversation except for a few small jumps of lacquer due to the trace of time. Sculpture dimensions: Height: 33 cm; Length: 21 cm; width: 15 cm - Butsudan dimensions: Height: 43 cm; Length: 24 cm; width: 22 cm. The Butsudan is a Japanese travel Buddhist hotel or chapel that can be of different sizes and receives one or more Buddhist deity (s) in different positions or more rarely in the form of a Tanka. These objects were passed down from generation to generation.
