Canthare Bronze Vase By Barbedienne & Sévin. 1866. Neoclassical Wine Cup.
Artist: Louis-constant Sévin
Greek-inspired wine cup, also called canthare, made in 1866 by the art foundry Ferdinand Barbedienne. This vase with high handles rests on a morello cherry marble base. The body, in silvered bronze and copper with black patina, is ornamented in high relief with vines (the canthare being a Dionysian item by excellence).
The handles in silvered bronze bear in their middle a Greek head. Engraved with a chisel under the handles, we can read three signatures. Textually: Maison F. Barbedienne Paris C. Sevin Inv. 1866 D. Attarge F.it. These three names, Ferdinand Barbedienne (founder), Louis Constant Sévin (sculptor), and Désiré Attargé (chaser) are found on another canthare by Barbedienne which was exhibited in the fall of 2019 in Paris by the Galerie Neuse in Bremen and is now part of the Musée d'Orsay collections:
