This large sculpture of a male character, in carved wood formerly in polychrome, perpetuates the medieval tradition, strongly rooted in the schools of northern France in the 16th and 17th centuries.
This man, who could be a Saint character or a lay person, is in front of us in a frontal hieratic attitude. Its large size gives it strength and a very strong presence, accentuated by a bearded face with fine features. The parted lips, the prominent cheekbones, the marked nose, the eyes surmounted by a large forehead demonstrate quality work and give life.
Wearing a belted tunic with many intricately sculpted pleats, the rounded neckline uncovers the nape of the neck and a large neck that adds lightness to this piece and prominently shows off the shoulder-length hair.
The missing right arm and left hand do not detract from the balance of this very interesting monoxyl sculpture. The irregularities of the wood give power to the manual work of the sculptor and the objective with precision that the object has been well carved from a single piece of wood.
Very decorative by its size, of great simplicity which makes it its strength, this sculpture is suitable for both contemporary and classic decoration. In good condition with lacks due to age, base eroded.
Dimension: Height 94 cm on a thin black metal base which ensures perfect stability.
