Mae Torané (or Mae Thorani) is the goddess of the earth, personification of Gaia typical of South East Asia. She still appears holding her dripping lock of hair like the Yao women with very long hair, to which she gives a characteristic twisting motion. She sprinkles the earth with her long hair, which evokes one of the five miracles of the life of the historical Buddha, namely the birth of Buddhism known as the "Great Vehicle". During this scene preceding Awakening, Buddha in meditation would have been tempted by Mara, but would have made the gesture of taking the earth as a witness (bhumisparça mudra). Mae Toranée would then appear, the water flowing from her braid symbolizing the benefits of the past lives of the Buddha (the Jatakas), and would thus have drowned the demon's army.
The rich and meticulous ornamental register, the numerous adornments, the use of gilding and the detail brought to the treatment of the garment indicate that we are indeed in the Rattanakosin era.
