Buddhist Temple - China - Qing Dynasty - 19th

Rare wooden Buddha in his temple, probably from Elm. The richly decorated temple is set on a wooden stele. On either side of the opening, two dragons fly and protect the representation of the earth. The roof is shaped like a pagoda and is topped with a lotus-flowered stupa. We can notice remnants of polychromy of red and green colors, as well as gilding. The Buddha is seated there in a meditation position in front of his Mandorle, his hands in Namaste Mudra. Have seen remains of polychromy and gilding with gold leaf. We find here a beautiful work of popular style certainly, but undoubtedly of very good taste. The shape of the roof is typical of Mongolian temples. Tibetan Buddhism remains the religion of 90% of Mongolians. Kubilai Khan, who was more versed in Chan Buddhism in his youth, was influenced by the Lama Phagpa of the Sakya school whom he appointed as imperial tax collector, this became Kubilai's personal faith. He built the temple of Zhenjue in his capital, Khanbalik (now Beijing) Good state of conservation except for restorations on certain corners of the roof.
