The Jingasa was a samurai headdress worn on trips. Lighter than the Kabuto, it played a role of protection from both the sun and bad weather. On some like this one, a mon indicated membership in different clans. From the Edo Period (1600-1868), it was worn more often as the era of internal wars in Japan disappeared.
