It is an archaeological object. Comes from a remainder of the estate of gallery owners Claude and Janine Vérité. (auction sale in 2020).
Height 21.3 - body diameter approximately 13.8 cm + protrusions of the ears and nose. Diameter of the neck 6.2 cm.
This unusual globular vase has as a distant ancestor the portrait vases of the Moche and Mochica cultures (Ist-VIIth).
Made with molds, they were produced in quantity.
It is rather a question here of a typology evoking suffering / death. We can compare with three copies of the Museum of the Americas in Madrid (see last photo - inventory museum 101104 - 10122 - 10912).
The Museum's models are in gray earth, typical of the Chimu - our copy, because of its color, is more from the Inca period, but retains the Chimu typology. It is therefore late 15th or 16th century.
A certificate from the gallery will accompany the invoice - Comes with a wooden base.
