"Achille Fouquier : "basque Village""
Achille Fouquier (1817-1895?) "Basque village" Pen drawing slightly washed in sepia 10 X 16 cm approximately, signed with the monogram AF framed by a mat with marie-louise cream with golden bevel mounted in a pretty frame with rounded angles to the very beautiful gilding 34 X 40 cm, I did not identify the village (it must have changed somewhat in 150 years!) of which we can see the church with the hexagonal bell tower in the background, but the architecture of the houses is typically Basque.
Tireless traveler Achille Fouquier brought back from his many travels sketches, anecdotes, observations collected in several books that were published. Whether from the Basque Country (he was mayor of Saint-Jean-de-Luz), Italy, Greece, the Balkans or the Middle East, his drawings taken from life are testimony to the history of these regions.
